Still missing. Columba McVeigh. Seamus Ruddy. Governor Allen does share one aspect with the previous Governor a man that Pickett did not like that much, but did respect.
He also expects Pickett to do the outside investigative work that Governor Rulon had him do. A concept totally unclear to the new Governor who is minutes away from landing in his state plane.
A January morning meant that Joe was able to meet with the Governor as things are slow this time of year in the Game Warden business. Once onboard with the Governor Pickett learns that he wants him to get to Saratoga and conduct an investigation.
The assigned game warden, Steve Pollock, recently quit his job and has yet to be replaced. Pickett is to go there and make it appear to all that he is a temporary Game Warden substituting for Pollack while privately and quietly conducting an investigation regarding a high profile missing person.
The missing person is a media celebrity which is why Game Warden Joe Pickett knows next to nothing about the case. A resident of the UK and a very powerful CEO, Kate Shelford-Longden, went missing months ago.
Back during the summer she had come to Wyoming to spend a week at the most expensive ranch in Wyoming, the Silver Creek Ranch near Saratoga.
Between the time she left the ranch on her last day and the time she was supposed to board her flight in Denver, she vanished as did her car.
Despite all the efforts by state and local law enforcement and other parties there has not been any sign of her at all. In addition to destroying state equipment in the course of his duties, and upsetting supervisors, Game Warden Joe Pickett has a reputation of getting things done and closing cases.
The Governor wants answers and wants Picket to get them. Things are too precarious and stressful at home as it is and losing his job right now would be a full scale disaster.
Pickett is going to have to do what the Governor asks and the pressure is clearly on. Good thing that Pickett has an ace up his sleeve as his 23 year old daughter Sheridan just happens to work at the Silver Creek Ranch.
He also may learn far more than he wants to about a host of subjects. The Disappeared: A Joe Pickett Novel is a solidly good read.
While not the best in this long running series, the book does provide a solidly good story. One that is a bit predictable at times for readers that are well familiar with this series and these characters.
Family has always been a mainstay of the series and that is present here as expected and in very familiar ways to long term readers. Author C. Box is not going to break new ground with these characters and thus hits the frequent themes of being a parent of girls moving into adulthood and all that entails as well as the familiar interfering mother in law among others.
A series that is best if read in order, this latest continues the theme of family -good or bad- that has been a long running hallmark of the series.
The Disappeared: A Joe Pickett Novel C. Kevin R. What more do I need to say. Mar 29, wally rated it really liked it Shelves: box.
Feb 19, Barry rated it it was amazing. The Disappeared is typical of C. Box's work, well written, a clever plot, interesting characters and a great pace.
Box is, in my opinion, one of the finest mystery writers of our times, approaching the standard of James Lee Burke.
I believe the fact that his stories are set in the rural mountains of Wyoming with his hero being a Game and Fish Warden has kept in in relative anonymity.
It is my considered opinion that, were his stories set in New York City, Chicago or even New Iberia, Louisiana, The Disappeared is typical of C.
It is my considered opinion that, were his stories set in New York City, Chicago or even New Iberia, Louisiana, he would be far more popular.
Joe Pickett, Box's Game and Fish Warden, has been tasked by the newly elected and very slimy Governor to find a well known Englishwoman who has disappeared after spending a week at an extremely opulent dude ranch.
Simultaneously, a massive wind farm is being created to supply electricity to Californians. Coincidentally, Joe's oldest daughter, Sheridan, is working as a wrangler at the aforementioned dude ranch.
A particularly interesting group of characters populates the story ranging from a few crusty old geezers typical of the area, to a particularly obnoxious English tabloid writer to the handsome head horse wrangler at the dude ranch could he be Sheridan's lover interest?
As is typical of Box, the characters are both vivid and thoroughly believable. Upon reflection, I have changed my rating from four to five stars. The End Mar 23, P.
I love the writing of C J Box, and particularly the Joe Pickett series. To find him including a British character hooked me immediately.
The story f I love the writing of C J Box, and particularly the Joe Pickett series. The story finds Joe Pickett sent to investigate the missing woman, in a district three hundred miles away from his home and in the depths of a freezing cold winter.
A prominent British businesswoman never came home from the high-end guest ranch she was visiting, and the British Embassy is pressing hard. But no sign of her months after she vanished?
That suggests something else. At the same time, his friend Nate Romanowski has asked Joe to intervene with the feds on behalf of an issue passionately felt by falconers, but inexplicably being blocked.

In a universe where humans and aliens have formed a loose government called the Earth Alliance, treaties guarantee that humans are subject to alien laws when on alien soil.
But alien laws often make no sense, and the punishments vary from loss of life to loss of a first-born child. Now three cases have collided: a stolen spaceyacht filled with dead bodies, two kidnapped human children, and a human woman on the run, trying to Disappear to avoid alien prosecution.
Flint must enforce the law-giving the children to aliens, solving the murders, and arresting the woman for trying to save her own life. But how is a man supposed to enforce laws that are unjust?
How can he sacrifice innocents to a system he's not sure he believes in? How can Miles Flint do the right thing in a universe where the right thing is very, very wrong?
This Endeavor Award-winning novel is Flint's first adventure, the story that turns him from a police detective in the Armstrong Dome on the Moon into a Retrieval Artist.

This book was just a total pleasure to read. The premise here is quite simple: in order to co-exist with the Alien cultures in the galaxy, and for commercial and political gain, humanity has to adhere to the laws and regulations laid down by the different Alien civilizations.
This whole setup is bad news f He was amazed that something so beautiful could be so dangerous. This whole setup is bad news for humans, since the various Alien punishments are extremely harsh.
This, of course, is illegal, and human law enforcement agencies are required to follow the law to the letter, which often means handing over humans for alien punishment, even if there is a chance that these humans are innocent.
It is obvious that humans have gotten the short and ugly end of the stick in this arrangement. Read this book!
He took a deep breath and reminded himself that this was his job. The Disappeared is a study in grey moral areas, and will twist the way you perceive what is just and fair to a ridiculous extent.
The prose dispenses with unnecessary exposition, leaving the story clear and concise. This adds to the general feel of the novel.
It reads very quickly and I recommend it to anybody who wants to read a Science Fiction novel that is just totally different from the many other ones out there.
The Disappeared is the first in the Retrieval Artist series. You can blame me for anything that goes wrong, but please, please stop this from getting worse.
